The largest shopping centre in Australia's Northern Territory, Casuarina Square is located in Casuarina, one of Darwin's northern suburbs. 15 kilometres north of Darwin City Centre, amongst a busy residential area, the shopping centre was built in the 1970s and extensively refurbished in the 1990s. On average, it receives more visits per week than the total population of Darwin, a remarkable statistic that reflects its multifaceted appeal.
Two huge supermarkets are found on the ground floor, Coles and Woolworths, along with a series of major department stores. A number of discount stores are situated on the edges of the shopping centre, their shelves packed with reduced items. These are all complimented by well over a hundred smaller specialty stores, ranging from electronics to fashion to cosmetics. In total, there are 200 shops. A large car park is located on the underground floor, and a seven-screen cinema is among the entertainment facilities.
With private transport, Casuarina Square can be reached from Trower Road. Many buses from the city centre to Darwin's northern suburbs pass by the shopping centre, providing convenient access to a shopping facility that has extended opening hours.
The single-story design might seem old fashioned but is based on the local building code for tropical cyclones. Within a year of being erected, a cyclone blew through and Casuarina Square remained standing.
