Cancun International Airport is the primary gateway into the exciting and breathtaking Riviera Maya region along the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The airport is situated only around 15 kilometres from the centre of the city of Cancun and is within short travelling distance to everything the Riviera Maya has to offer. The airport has grown to become Mexico’s most important international gateway and has done wonders for the Riviera Maya region and the country as a whole.
The airport is comprised of three terminals and offers a lot in terms of facilities and amenities to ensure all the needs of travellers are met. There is a huge selection of cafes, restaurants and eateries available at the airport ranging from quick fast food outlets to top quality restaurants. In addition to this, the extensive duty-free shopping affords travellers the chance to pick up some last minute goods and souvenirs before flying home.
Cancun International Airport operates flights to and from a large number of destinations as far as Europe. The airport is close by to the city of Cancun and only around 50 kilometres from Playa del Carmen and is linked to the city by road. Those flying into the airport can easily pre-book a taxi to their destination from just outside the Arrivals area, while many private vehicle companies also offer their services.
The airport was originally used as an airbase in the 1940s by the United States. After this, the airport slowly became an increasingly important civilian airport. Cancun International Airport notably benefited from an extensive expansion project which included constructing a third terminal in 2007 to boost its annual passenger capacity to up to 20 million.
