Home to an idyllic coastline, the tropical island of Cozumel is famous for its scuba diving locations and colourful coral reefs. The Caribbean island is relatively untouched, with an absence of touristic shops and an abundance of secluded beaches, locally-run restaurants and other authentic experiences.
Things to do in Cozumel
Sitting off the eastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Cozumel is home to Punta Sur Eco Beach wildlife park. The park is the largest ecological reserve on the island and has an abundance of wild flowers and exotic birds. For excellent Mexican cuisine, head to Alberto’s Beach Bar to dine on seafood tacos and fresh beef burritos.
When it comes to watersports, make sure you visit Palancar Beach to enjoy kayaking, snorkelling and an array of boat excursions, from glass-bottom boat rides out into the Gulf of Mexico to sunset catamaran sailing.
The island’s biggest pull is its proximity to spectacular scuba diving sites. The Santa Rosa Wall sits just a short boat ride away and is home to schools of barracuda and sea turtles, while the neighbouring Palancar Reef is the perfect spot for shallow drift driving.
Getting there
Cancun International Airport is under a three-hour drive away and ferries depart regularly from Playa del Carmen. Alternatively, fly directly into Cozumel International Airport and make use of the local taxis or explore on foot in the city centre.
