Once an important mining town for iron ore, gold and silver, Bodenmais is now one of the largest resorts in the Bavarian Forest. In the summer months, it provides a base for hiking and mountain biking while in the winter months, the slopes of Silberberg attract cross-country and alpine skiers.
Things to do in Bodenmais
For elevated views across the Lamer Winkel region, climb to the summit of Kleiner Arber, a 1,383-metre-high peak topped by a cross marking the highest point in the Upper Palatinate. Several trails lead up the mountain’s slopes and the summit is traversed by the E6 European long-distance path, which extends from the north-west tip of Finland to the Adriatic coast of Slovenia.
If you’re visiting in the winter months, you can hit the slopes of Silberberg, which offers a family-friendly setting for skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing. Silberberg’s long-established mining history can be explored during guided tours through the 600-metre-long Barbarastollen. Learn about the mining industry here since 1311 and some of the 60 different minerals found within the mountain.
A short drive north of Bodenmais is the Hochfall Wasserfall, a multi-tiered cascade that plunges into a circular pool of water. A hiking trail leads to the waterfall’s wooden boardwalk, from where you can admire its flow. Also nearby is the Rißloch Wasserfall, which is one of the largest waterfalls in the Bavarian Forest.
