The Auckland Central Business District is the throbbing economic heart of the Auckland metropolitan area. Stretching from the waterfront to the centre of the city, Auckland CBD serves as a picturesque landscape of skyscrapers comprising prominent aspects of urban culture, dining, shopping and nightlife.
Things to Do
The Auckland CBD boasts many historic landmarks and is brimming with tourist attractions, highlighted by the Britomart region. Britomart serves as the city’s contemporary hotspot, offering eclectic restaurants representing every corner of the world, premier nightlife destinations and trendy shopping spots.
For a taste of cultural charm, take a stroll down Queen Street. The iconic roadway contains the Auckland Civic Theatre, where you can catch a range of popular live performances. The area also boasts excellent shopping opportunities, including a collection of high-end designer retail shops, prominently represented by Louis Vuitton and Gucci.
While on Queen Street, make sure to tour the prestigious exhibitions contained within the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki before continuing on your journey. Traditional and contemporary works of art are displayed, with artists from New Zealand and elsewhere around the world.
Karangahape Road, also known as “K’ Road”, is the melting pot for musicians, artists and writers. Unique design shops fill street corners alongside vintage streetwear stores and music joints. It’s the perfect place to sit and relax with a coffee or have a night on the town and get a taste of the extravagant CBD nightlife.
Getting around Auckland CBD
The CBD contains the majority of the city’s transit options, centred around the Britomart Transport Centre, while the Auckland Ferry Terminal is the hub of the ferry network. Buses travel throughout the CBD and provide for the most popular form of public transit, but the most efficient way of getting around individual streets is on foot.
