Things to do in Ares
Spend your days relaxing on Praia de Ares, a sweeping crescent of sand overlooking the protected waters of the Enseada de Ares. It’s backed by a breezy promenade dotted with sculptures and connects to a small boat ramp. Overlooking the beach are several eateries where you can dine throughout the day, including Corbalan, Avenida and Bar O’Gaitero.
A hiking trail connects east to Praia de Seselle, a quieter stretch of sand backed by grassy dunes. On the other side of the headland is Praia de Sabadelle, a peaceful cove that can be reached via a steep set of stairs. On the opposite side of Ares is Praia do Colado, a magnificent beach backed by a dramatic cliff.
A short drive north-west of Ares is the Monasterio de Santa Catalina de Montefaro, a beautiful monastery dating back to the 12th century. You can stroll through its small botanical garden and grab a bite to eat at the on-site cafe. Nearby is the Ruinas da Bateria do Faro, which was constructed in the 1930s to protect the Costa Artabra.
