A great place to begin an exploration is by the riverside at Brühl's Terrace. It is one of the city’s most popular areas for dining and photography. Take a riverboat ride along the River Elbe or enjoy an al fresco meal in one of the waterside restaurants. Brühl's Terrace is home to Dresden Fortress. The subterranean vaults contain displays of memorabilia and regional artefacts. Stroll to Dresden Cathedral to admire its impressive architecture, before continuing to Semper Opera House and Zwinger Palace. The latter is home to the Museum of Mathematics and Physics, Old Masters Picture Gallery and an incredible Baroque style. These iconic landmarks offer a unique insight into the history, art and architecture of the city. Neumarkt Square is the ideal stop off point for a beverage, to indulge in shopping or explore Frauenkirche, the city’s famous domed church. Climb to the top of the tower to gain breathtaking views of Dresden’s cityscape and the river.
All areas of Dresden Altstadt are easily reached on foot. The big-ticket attractions are within short walks of each other, and there are plenty of cafes in which to stop for refreshments. Trams and buses operate throughout the Old Town centre, offering frequent, easy to use services. Visitors can also opt to explore the tourist sites of Altstadt via bicycle or pedicab. Taxi and Uber are also available.
Dresden’s Altstadt was almost destroyed during the Second World War. The city has since recreated the buildings as they once were, with a few modern twists. Today, the Old Town is one of the most well-regarded in Germany. The view to Brühl's Terrace is known to be one of the most stunning vistas in the country. Visitors to Dresden Altstadt will find museums, markets or activities to suit everyone in the travelling party. It’s a little-known city, which is big on attractions with local landmarks which shouldn’t be missed.
