Overlooking a bustling port, Alghero City Centre lies on the north-west coast of Sardinia. The area has been settled since prehistoric times and emerged as a fortified port town by the early 12th century. With its Catalan-Gothic architecture and stunning beaches, Alghero is a popular tourist destination.
Things to do in Alghero City Centre
Spend a day wandering the cobblestoned streets of Alghero’s Old Town, which is ringed by ancient city walls. Dominating the townscape is the Cattedrale dell’ Immacolata Concezione, a 16th-century masterpiece that combines Catalan-Gothic and Neo-Classical architectural styles. Marvel at the monumental columns on its western facade before stepping inside to see the altar designed by Giuseppe Massetti.
Occupying a Liberty-style villa in Alghero City Centre is the Museo del Corallo di Alghero, which offers a fascinating insight into the marine species that inhabit the nearby waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Learn about Alghero’s strong ties to Corallium rubrum (also known as “red coral”) and its use throughout the centuries. In addition to the museum’s scientific exhibits, there are coral-made sculptures and jewellery on display.
On the edge of Alghero City Centre is the Giardini Giuseppe Manno, which centres around a whitewashed sculpture of the politician after whom the park is named. You can stretch your legs on the leafy walking trails or relax on one of the benches while watching the world go by. The park is just a stone’s throw from the Torre di Porta Terra, a centuries-old tower that served as the city’s main entrance.
