La Maddalena is a dreamy island surrounded by sandy beaches, jewel-toned lagoons and pink granite cliffs. It’s part of the Maddalena archipelago, a cluster of islands marooned in the Mediterranean Sea, between Corsica and Sardinia. Sunbathe on some of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia, sail around the archipelago and wine and dine in the historic village.
Things to do in La Maddalena
La Maddalena Village has a lively feel, with cafes, bars and trattorias on every corner. There’s plenty of history to take in, whether you’re sipping espresso in a cobbled piazza or admiring architectural gems like the 19th-century Church of Saint Mary Magdalene. The quay is dotted with waterfront restaurants where you can enjoy seafood platters and sip sparkling Vermentino wine.
Set sail on a scenic cruise and experience La Maddalena at its best. You’ll drop anchor in turquoise lagoons like Porto della Madonna and visit uninhabited islands like Spargi. The island is fringed by postcard-perfect beaches such as Cala Soraya. Budelli Island is famous for Spiaggia Rosa, a pristine beach with pink-tinged sand made of crushed shells and corals. The best cruises include lunch at a waterfront trattoria.
A bridge connects La Maddalena with the neighbouring island of Caprera. The beaches are stunning and range from long sandy bays to rocky coves. Cala Coticcio is one of the most beautiful, with gleaming white sand and aquamarine water framed by rose-coloured rocks. In the interior of the island, the former home of Italian general Giuseppe Garibaldi has been reimagined as a local history museum.
Getting around La Maddalena
La Maddalena Village is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. Rental cars are the best way to explore the island and visit neighbouring Caprera at your own pace. Ferries run between La Maddalena and the port of Palau on Sardinia in 20 minutes.
