Albena is a sun-drenched Black Sea resort framed by forested mountains. A five-kilometre stretch of white sand slopes into the calm, crystalline water. Water parks, putt-putt courses and adorable miniature trains make Albena a great choice for a family-friendly getaway on the Bulgarian Riviera.
Things to do in Albena
Hotels dot the beach and mean you can stay just steps from the sand. Calm, shallow water makes Albena one of the top family resorts in the Balkans. You can walk out for 50+ metres and the water is never more than waist high, which is perfect for teaching little ones to swim. Rent a sun lounger and top up your tan, stay active with beach sports like volleyball and soccer, or join sunset horseback rides with the kids.
From colourful water parks to indoor bowling alleys, there’s plenty to keep kids entertained in Albena. Test your aim on the putt-putt course and climb aboard the miniature beach train for a scenic coastal ride. Local shops are well-stocked with everything from swimsuits and sunscreen to kites and sandcastle-building sets.
Restaurants line the beach and serve ocean-fresh seafood and cocktails, plus lots of kid-friendly meals. Try local specialties like “banitsa” pastries stuffed with egg and cheese, “meshana skara” grilled meat and “tarator” cold cucumber soup. Albena is a stone’s throw from the Romanian border, which means you’ll see plenty of “sarmale” cabbage rolls and “mici” grilled mincemeat on menus.
Spot more than 180 bird species in Baltata Nature Reserve. A welcome change from the beach, the reserve protects a lush wetland ecosystem fed by the Baltata River. Sunlight streams through the canopy and creates a magical green glow. Herons, cranes, storks and spotted eagles are just some of the birds you’ll see in the sanctuary.
