Perched on the shores of Lake Velence, Agard is a small village and getaway destination to the south-west of Budapest. It’s home to a grass-backed beach where you can swim in the summer months and plenty of restaurants serving Hungarian fare.
Learn about the life and legacy of one of Hungary’s most beloved historical novelists at the Geza Gardonyi Memorial House, which is where the writer was born. You can read excerpts from his diaries and browse his personal belongings, as well as see publications of his works. Take note of the glass-roofed study with its atmospheric light.
Sprawling west of Agard is the Velence Lake Nature Reserve, a wetland that is an important habitat for a variety of bird species. It provides a nesting site for crested cranes, spoonbills and summer geese and preserves significant bog and moor plant species.
Getting there
