Things to do in Workum
Admire whimsical watercolours and still-life paintings at the Jopie Huisman Museum. The museum is dedicated to the celebrated Dutch painter, who was born in Workum in the 1920s. Housed in a restored 17th-century building, Museum Warkums Erfskip is also worth a visit and features exhibits on the narrative of the town.
From the red-brick Weigh House overlooking Market Square to Gothic-style St. Gertrudis Church, Workum boasts beautiful heritage architecture. Strolling along the cobbled streets of the town centre feels like stepping back in time. A “sluis” canal connects the town centre with the coast and is dotted with traditional wooden fishing boats.
Dine at local restaurants and try Frisian specialties like herring, smoked eel and “snirtjebraten” roasted pork shoulder cooked with juniper berries. Cafes spill onto the sidewalks and serve slices of “ostfriesentorte” cake made with layers of whipped cream and brandy-soaked raisins. Bakery windows will tempt you with stacks of “drabbelkoek” Frisian cookies.
Relax and enjoy the sunshine on Workum Strand. The white-sand beach is popular with kitesurfers and a great place to try the adrenaline-fuelled sport. Take a beginner lesson or rent gear from a local outfitter if you have experience. Walk down to the point to see a historic white lighthouse built in the 17th century.
