Sprawling between the waters of Thisted Bredning and the North Sea, Thisted is a lively town and municipality in North Denmark. It’s home to the largest Bronze Age burial mound in the country and a renowned organic brewery, as well as dune-backed beaches and karst lakes protected within the Nationalpark Thy.
Things to do in Thisted
Learn about the people, industries and events that have shaped the region at the Thisted Museum, which houses around 100,000 objects dating from the Stone Age to the modern-day. Get up close to a Bronze Age sword and the findings from ancient burial mounds, then learn about Thisted’s transition into a bustling market town. The museum also showcases the town’s current entrepreneurial culture.
For a day at the beach, head to picturesque Vorupør, which is one of the most popular resort towns in the district of Thy. You can watch the fishing boats hauling in the daily catch or sunbathe on the sand before swimming under the close watch of trained lifeguards. Vorupør Beach lies within Nationalpark Thy, which also encompasses rugged limestone cliffs and forested hiking trails.
Nationalpark Thy is also home to Vandet Sø and Nors Sø, two sparkling karst lakes that are among the country’s cleanest. They provide important habitat for a variety of bird species, as well as pike, perch and eels. Nors Sø is also home to Denmark’s only population of Najas flexilis, an aquatic plant that’s becoming increasingly rare in northern Europe.
