Thane, also known as the “City of Lakes”, is studded with over 30 shimmering lakes and surrounded by verdant jungles and hillsides. Venture out of the city to visit Sanjay Gandhi National Park, home to Indian leopards and an ancient network of Buddhist caves.
Things to do in Thāne
Carved into a basalt outcrop, the Kanheri Caves are adorned with ancient Buddhist sculptures, carvings and paintings. The network includes more than 100 chambers, all hand-chiselled by Buddhist monks. Wander around the cavernous halls, peer into meditation rooms and admire the incredible craftsmanship.
To the west of the city is Sanjay Gandhi National Park, where teak forest and bamboo groves serve as a sanctuary for leopards, monkeys and exotic birds. The park looks best in monsoon season, when it comes alive with emerald foliage and cascading waterfalls.
Encircled by lush forests, Upvan Lake is perfect for a picnic on the foreshore or stocking up on snacks at one of the street-food stands. Alternatively, visit Talao Pali Lake to rent a boat or ride in a horse-drawn carriage. You can also visit Kopineshwar Mandir, a historic temple that's been welcoming worshipers since 1750.
Get a dose of sun and sand at Kelva Beach, which stretches for seven kilometres along the Arabian Sea. It's shaded by Suru trees and is a popular weekend destination for families. You can also climb up to Kelva Fort, a 16th-century Portuguese stronghold enveloped by jungle.
