Things to do in Tetovo
The Painted Mosque soars over Tetovo and is the city’s star attraction. Also called Šarena Džamija, the building features a magnificent façade decorated with colourful frescoes. The interior is just as beautiful, with sparkling chandeliers, plush carpets and jewel-toned paintings from floor to ceiling.
Stroll through the Old Bazaar, a lively market where you can sample local delicacies and purchase traditional handicrafts. The bazaar has been operating since the 15th century and features narrow alleys lined with colourful shops. It’s a great place to try popular street foods like kebabs, “burek” pastries filled with cheese and spinach.
Explore well-marked trails in Sar Mountains National Park. The challenging trail up 2,748-metre-tall Titov Vrv rewards you with panoramic views of Tetovo and the surrounding countryside. Leshnica Canyon is a gentler hike suitable for kids, starting in the nearby village of Bozovce and winding through a lush canyon before reaching a cascading waterfall.
Dine at traditional “kafana” restaurants and enjoy authentic Macedonian cuisine. Try local specialties like “tavče gravče” bean stew and “polneti piperki” stuffed peppers. The city is home to a flourishing Albanian community, which means you’ll also see dishes like “fergese” stewed tomatoes, “pispili” cornbread and “tarator” creamy cucumber soup on menus.
