About Te Mata

Te Mata is a laid-back village perched on the Coromandel Peninsula and fringed by sandy beaches. Relax and enjoy the coastal scenery in Te Mata Point Reserve. The park is set at the mouth of the Te Mata River, which flows into the Firth of Thames. Stroll along the pristine coastline, sunbathe on the beach and enjoy a picnic on the grassy foreshore. Tapu Beach is just south of Te Mata and features soft sand and a family-friendly atmosphere.

Te Mata is a gateway to the Coromandel Peninsula, a hub for water-based activities. Kayak around sheltered bays and paddleboard on picturesque inlets. Fishing charter tours take you out to the Firth of Thames, where you can reel in trophy-sized kingfish, snapper and “kahawai" salmon.

Off the coast, the Coromandel Peninsula invites you to discover lush native rainforests and hike rugged mountain trails. Landmarks like Karangahake Gorge showcase the unique geology of the peninsula. A well-marked track winds through the gorge and follows the path of the Ohinemuri River. Along the way, you’ll pass historic mining buildings, walk through abandoned railway tunnels and cross a suspension bridge.

Getting there

Te Mata is on the western coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, a two-hour drive from Auckland. The village is compact and easy to get around on foot, though a rental car is recommended for the freedom to explore the Coromandel Peninsula at your own pace.
