Straddling the sound that connects the Upper and Middle Fryken lakes, Sunne is a small town in south-west Sweden. It is an important industrial hub for the printing and packaging industries and provides creative inspiration for the painter Tage Åsén and the writer Selma Lagerlöf.
Things to do in Sunne
One of the town’s most important architectural landmarks is the Sunne Church, which was rebuilt following a fire in 1886. It is often referred to as the “Cathedral of Fryksdalen” due to its large size, while it also houses a baptismal font dating back to the 13th century. Coincide your visit with a Sunday service to explore the interior or enjoy a stroll around the well-kept cemetery where some of Sunne’s most prominent residents are laid to rest.
On the northern edge of the town centre is the Sunneparken, a waterfront green space with a children’s playground and a pump track. You can watch the boats coming and going from the marina or grab a bite to eat at the Restaurant Eurasia. A short drive north of Sunne is Tossebergsklatten, which provides a setting for hiking and paragliding.
If you’re visiting in the summer months, you can cool off at Sunne Sommarland, a family-friendly water park with slides, a lazy river and a fountain play area. You can challenge your family and friends on the “Duel”, brave the “Free Fall” or tackle the inflatable obstacles of the “Wipeout”. Pavilions with sun beds, chairs and tables are available for rent.
Getting around Sunne
Sunne is around 45 minutes’ drive from Hagfors Airport, which has flights to destinations across Sweden. Long-distance buses connect to Sunne and the town centre is compact enough to explore on foot. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the region.
