Encompassing 55 low-lying islands, the South Funen Archipelago is a popular summer destination in Denmark. Surrounded by the Baltic Sea, it is the largest flooded Ice Age landscape in the world. It includes the picturesque islands of Skarø, Drejø and Hjortø, as well as charming Strynø with its historic mill and boat museum.
Admire the half-timbered houses that cluster in the main village of Lyø or relax on one of the island’s sun-drenched beaches. You can cycle around elongated Avernakø and cast a fishing line to see what’s biting or coincide your visit with the traditional raising of the maypole to celebrate the coming of summer.
On hilly Bjørnø, you can spend hours hiking through beach meadows and along high cliffs while enjoying views toward Faaborg and Funen. Tractor rides are the most popular way of visiting Svelmø, a tiny island with a lagoon that attracts abundant birdlife in the wintertime.
Getting there
Ferries depart from Svendborg, Faaborg and Rudkøbing for the South Funen Archipelago. From Svendborg, you can reach Odense in around 30 minutes and Copenhagen Airport in two hours. Renting a private boat is the most convenient way of island-hopping around the archipelago.
