Surrounded by the lush jungles and towering volcanoes of the Bicol Region, Sorsogon City attracts legions of intrepid travellers. It’s considered the gateway to Bulusan Volcano National Park and home to one of the highest and most dramatic peaks in the Philippines.
Things to do in Sorsogon City
Rising more than 1,500 metres above the city, Mount Bulusan is a bucket-list hike for adventurous travellers. Tackle the summit solo or sign up for a group trek with a local agency. You can also visit the cascading waterfalls, soak in hot springs or paddle in emerald green Bulusan Lake.
Every October, Sorsogon City hums with activity during the annual Kasanggayahan Festival. From pageants and parades to live music and traditional canoe races, the festival celebrates the city’s colourful history.
You can cool off with a day trip to one of Sorsogon City’s nearby beaches. At Rizal Beach, you’ll find a golden stretch of sand lined with swaying palms and colourful seafood shacks.
For scuba divers, Sorsogon City is a launch pad to one of the best whale shark encounters on the planet. From October to May, schools of whale sharks gather at the mouth of the Donsol River to feed on plankton. If you’re not scuba certified, there are numerous charter boats and cruises that can get you up close to these gentle giants.
Getting around Sorsogon City
In the city centre, the easiest and fastest way to get around is by taxi. Colourful jeepneys and tricycles are also readily available. Rent a car if you prefer to go at your own pace and have a bit more freedom.
