Things to do in Solothurn
Centuries-old churches and chapels soar over the pedestrianised Old Town. It’s a lovely place to stroll, with cobbled alleys leading to bubbling fountains and sunny squares. St Ursus Cathedral is one of the most beautiful landmarks and features an elegant Italianate façade designed by iconic Baroque architect Gaetano Matteo Pisoni.
Enjoy a scenic cruise on the River Aare or rent a kayak and explore the waterway at your own pace. From the water, you’ll get fantastic views of the town’s beautiful Baroque buildings and rugged Jura mountains. Look for nesting storks as you pass Inseli, a tiny island marooned in the river.
Follow the scenic trail to Verena Gorge, where you can peer into a picturesque 15th-century hermitage. You’ll also find beautiful trails along the banks of the Aare. Tackle 1,284-metre-tall Weissenstein if you’re up for a challenge. It’s the town’s most prominent mountain and commands sweeping views over the surrounding peaks, forests and countryside. Solothurn is a popular stop on the Mittelland Route, one of the most famous long-distance cycle trails in Switzerland.
Al fresco cafes, bars and restaurants line the riverfront promenade. Sit down for “kaffee fertig” brandy-infused coffee and a slice of Solothurner Torte, a local cake made with roasted hazelnuts. Warm summer evenings call for ice-cold Feldschlösschen.
