Things to do in Sigiriya
The Ancient City of Sigiriya towers over the surrounding plains and features a flat summit fringed by sheer granite rock walls. The ancient palace dates to the 5th century and was built by a Sri Lankan king. The views from the summit are breathtaking and stretch across the emerald-green plains and forests. As you climb to the summit, you’ll pass a series of fascinating sites. Snap a photo with the enormous stone Lion’s Paws and admire colourful frescoes hidden beneath a sheltered rock gallery. Some were painted as early as the 5th century.
Sigiriya is set in beautiful Royal Gardens dotted with centuries-old bathing pools and pavilions. Relax under the shade of tropical trees and look for macaques perched in the canopy. The enchanting Boulder Gardens at the base of Sigiriya feature winding paths and staircases surrounded by enormous rock formations.
