Located on the Jonic Coast of northern Calabria, Sibari is an Italian seaside resort renowned for its cultivation of citrus fruits and olives. It lies just a stone’s throw from the Gulf of Taranto and near the archaeological site of ancient Sybaris, which formed part of Magna Graecia.
Hugging the Gulf of Taranto is a gorgeous sweep of white sand, which is dotted with beach clubs offering umbrellas and sun loungers for rent. You can swim in the refreshing waters of the Ionian Sea before feasting on locally caught seafood at one of the beachfront bars.
History buffs should visit the National Archeological Museum of Sibaritide, which showcases findings from the ancient settlement of Sybaris. A highlight of the collection is the 6th-century-BC bronze table dedicated to Athena. Amongst the ancient ruins are several villas with mosaic-covered floors.
Getting there
Sibari is around an hour’s drive from Cosenza and 1.5 hours from Taranto. Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport is 2.5 hours away and has flights to destinations across Europe. Both trains and buses connect to Sibari and the town is small enough to explore on foot.
