About Shenandoah

Nicknamed “Daughter of the Stars,” Shenandoah spreads along the banks of Shenandoah River, tucked between the Blue Ridge Mountains and Massanutten Ridge. The entire town and its structures have listings on the National and State Registers of Historic Places. From fishing to water sports, museums and parks, this charming community blends seamlessly into the greater Shenandoah Valley.

Things to do in Shenandoah

Rent a kayak, canoe or inner tube in town to float down the Shenandoah River, either on your own or with an experienced guide. You can also book a fishing excursion with all the gear included. If you'd like to make it a multi-day experience, your guide will set up tents for camping along the riverbanks.

Shenandoah harbours more than 300 buildings, homes and businesses in the historic district, including structures related to its past as a thriving railroad town. Visit the Town Hall and visitor centre to view historical photographs and memorabilia.

While strolling through town, keep an eye out for geocache treasures and have a picnic along the river. Feeling a need for speed? Drive about 10 minutes outside the city limits to the Shenandoah Speedway to watch dirt-track events and lawnmower racing.

Within a 20-minute drive, you’ll find yourself in the deep heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Don’t miss seeing the spellbinding Luray Caverns, known as “Geology’s Hall of Fame”. Considered the longest series of caverns in Eastern America, the cathedral-sized caves are full of stalagmites, stalactites and translucent calcite.
