A coastal city in south-eastern Guangdong Province, Shanwei dates back more than 2,000 years. It’s home to historic temples, scenic parks, and a fishing harbor and is near picturesque South China Sea beaches.
Things to do in Shanwei
Need to stretch your legs? Head to Lotus Forest Park to hike Haifeng Lotus Mountain, the highest mountain in East Guangdong. Walk along the scenic trails to admire over 150 kinds of harbors and shrubs and an ancient long-leaf podocarpus, then visit Zuokeng Village to see its 6.5-metre-high fairy tea tree behind Jiming Temple.
Head to the Shanwei Fengshan Temple Tourist Area to see the famous Mazu statue. Made of stone, the statue towers over the scenic area at 16 meters tall and many believe that the “white pearl” in the Red Bay has been wishing local fishermen a safe trip home.
Visit the Zhelang Peninsula Tourist Zone to enjoy a day of swimming at the picturesque beach in its gentle, clear waters. In summer, you can also sign up for sailing or surfing lessons, then enjoy fresh seafood at one of the local restaurants lining the coast.
Escape the big-city bustle at Bifengtang Fishing Harbour. Here you can admire city skyline views, go fishing and dine on fresh seafood paired with vegetable tea and glutinous rice at one of the nearby restaurants.
Getting around Shanwei
Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport is 158 kilometers from Shanwei. You can also take long-distance buses from Guangzhou in around 3.5 hours. Upon arrival in Shanwei, the best way to get around is by bus or taxi.
