Once known as the "Grain Capital of the British Empire”, Sexsmith is a peaceful town in one of Alberta’s most fertile agricultural regions. It’s named after a trapper and trader David Sexsmith who settled here in 1912, with several of the town’s original buildings still standing today.
Things to do in Sexsmith
Learn about the life of local politician Walter Paszkowski while touring the Paszkowski Heritage House, a pre-World War II farmhouse that stands opposite the Sexsmith District Museum. It forms a historic streetscape along with Anderson Hall, Emmanuel Anglican Church and the Nels Johnson Blacksmith Shop where vintage tools and equipment are on display.
If you want to get active, you can take advantage of the baseball diamonds and horseshoe pits in Benville Park or utilise Sexsmith’s curling rink. The town is also on the doorstep of the 9-hole Morningview Park Golf Course and the 18-hole Spruce Meadows Golf & Country Club, which offers tree-lined fairways and multi-tiered greens that will appeal to players of all abilities.
Travelling with kids? You can pay a visit to the Down to Earth Farms Petting Zoo to get up close to their friendly donkeys, alpacas and baby goats. Help the owners collect eggs from the ducks and chickens, pet a cuddly rabbit and watch the resident pigs wallowing in the mud.
