Sprawling across the southern outskirts of Berlin, Schönefeld is a suburban municipality in the German state of Brandenburg. It encompasses the old Berlin Schönefeld Airport and the major international transport hub of Berlin Brandenburg Airport. First mentioned in the 13th century, Schönefeld became an aviation centre in 1933 with the arrival of the Henschel aircraft company.
Things to do in Schönefeld
You can watch the planes coming and going from Berlin Brandenburg Airport at the Planespotter Platz, a small parking area overlooking the runways. It’s located near the Golfanlagen Gross Kienitz, which features two golf courses, plus a three-hole practice area. You can develop your skills on one of the two driving ranges or take advantage of the practice bunker and putting green.
On the other side of Berlin Brandenburg Airport’s runways is the Torfbusch, a picturesque nature reserve that can be explored along several walking trails. You can admire its centrepiece lake on foot or on horseback, with the Keidel Ranch equestrian facility located nearby. It’s a great place to learn to ride and interact with friendly ponies.
Want to experience Germany’s biggest wind tunnel? Head to the Hurricane Factory Berlin and experience the thrill of flying. Both solo and duo flights are available in the 15-metre-high tunnel, with the option to fly upwards, downwards and spin around. Non-flying family members can watch all the action from the Hurricane Factory’s bistro, which serves healthy and hearty meals.
Getting around Schönefeld
