Relax and unwind in the Tuscan spa town of Saturnia. The town is famous for mineral-rich hot springs, which cascade down a travertine hillside and create a series of milky aquamarine pools. They’re known as Terme di Saturnia and have been attracting wellness warriors for centuries.
Claim a spot in one of the pools and enjoy cinematic views of the Tuscan countryside. A nearby volcano heats the springs and keeps the water balmy year-round. High concentrations of sulphur, as well as dissolved carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide gasses, will leave your skin feeling smooth and soft.
The Saturnia town centre oozes Tuscan charm. Rustic stone houses line the narrow streets, which are dotted with cafes and trattorias. Sit down for a traditional Tuscan appetiser of “fettunta” bread rubbed with raw garlic and drizzled with olive oil. Follow up with a “panzanella” salad tossed with sun-ripened vegetables and a hearty bowl of “acquacotta” soup topped with a poached egg and a generous sprinkle of pecorino cheese.
Getting there
Saturnia is in Tuscany, a one-hour drive from Grosseto and three hours from Florence. The Saturnia town centre is compact and easy to get around on foot. You’ll need a car to visit the Terme di Saturnia hot springs.
