Things to do in Sasebo
Stroll along the waterfront promenade of Sasebo Seaside Park where you can watch the ships coming and going from the harbour. Soak up the 360-degree ocean and city views from the glass observation hall and admire the impressive whale sculptural fountain.
Wander through the recreated 17th-century Dutch town of the Huis Ten Bosch theme park to see wooden windmills and meandering canals. It’s enhanced by seasonal floral displays featuring tulips, roses and dahlias, as well as traditional restaurants and leisure boats where you can enjoy a European-style atmosphere.
Sasebo serves as the gateway to Kujuku-shima, an archipelago of more than 200 hundred islands that scatter along the Kitamatsuura Peninsula. Embark on a boat trip to the main island of Kuro-shima, home to the striking brick church of Kuroshima Tenshudō, then explore the pristine landscapes of Saikai National Park.
Animal lovers should visit the Zoological and Botanical Garden Mori-kirara where animals from all corners of the globe are exhibited. Attend the impressive lion show and hand-feed Hanako the elephant, then witness penguins swimming over your head in what is Japan’s largest penguin house.
Getting around Sasebo
Sasebo is about a 1.5-hour bus ride from Nagasaki Airport and around two hours by train to Fukuoka. The downtown area is easy to explore on foot, with buses connecting to the surrounding sights.
