Forming part of Circeo National Park, San Felice Circeo overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea on the west coast of Italy. It’s renowned for its stunning beaches, seaside caves and scattering of historic ruins, all of which offer views of the nearby Pontine Islands.
Things to do in San Felice Circeo
If you’re visiting in the summer months, you can spend your days relaxing on Spiaggia di San Felice Circeo, a golden sweep of sand backed by cave-studded cliffs. It’s dotted with lido beach bars where you can grab drinks and snacks throughout the day and rent umbrellas and sun loungers. For those feeling active, a range of water sports is available.
History buffs can visit the Acropoli di Circeii, the remains of an ancient Roman city that is believed to have been founded by the Greeks at the end of the Bronze Age. It can be accessed along a short hiking trail from San Felice Circeo and boasts impressive views across the town and the surrounding coastline. Continue trekking west to the medieval Fortino di Cretarossa for elevated views of the Pontine Islands.
Nestled below the acropolis is the Grotta delle Capre, which was discovered in the 19th century by a local archaeologist, Arturo Issel. It was once used by shepherds to shelter their flocks, hence the name “Cave of the Goats”. Bring a torch to explore its huge cavern at your leisure or enjoy the views of the Tyrrhenian Sea from its entrance.
