Saint Gilles Les Bains is a sun-drenched town fringed by white-sand beaches and lush tropical forests. Swim and sunbathe on some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Plage des Roches Noires is just steps from the town centre and features a long stretch of sand dotted with palms. Further south is L'Hermitage Beach, a popular beach sheltered by an offshore reef. The calm, crystalline water is perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
Hike well-maintained trails around Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. You’ll be amazed by the lunar landscapes and if you're lucky, see smoke unfurling from the crater. Hire a local guide if you plan to trek to the summit.
Dine at beachfront restaurants and enjoy flavour-packed Creole cuisine. Try dishes like “cari” spicy meat curry, “rougail poisson” fish stew and “boucane” smoked pork. Enjoy a rainbow-coloured tropical fruit platter for dessert.
