Nestled at the base of the Cap Corse Peninsula, Saint-Florent is a charming harbour town on the north coast of Corsica. Once an important fishing port and Genoese military base, it has been transformed into a summer tourist resort, with blissful beaches, sun-drenched vineyards and centuries-old ruins on its doorstep.
Things to do in Saint-Florent
Stroll the atmospheric streets of Saint-Florent to admire its Romanesque cathedral, which has been in existence since the 12th century. Now designated as a Monument Historique, it houses a magnificent altar. Follow the road that leads up to the 15th-century Citadella di San Fiurenzu, where you can enjoy elevated views across the town.
Extending south-west of Saint-Florent is Plage de la Roya, a sandy beach where you can swim in the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. It’s also a popular setting for water sports, with everything from windsurfing to kayaking and jet skiing on offer. On the other side of Saint-Florent is the rocky Plage de l’Ospedale, which is an ideal spot for watching the sunset.
Across the Gulf of Saint-Florent are the Torra di Fornali and Torra di Mortella, which formed part of a series of coastal defences built by the Genoese in the 16th century. Follow the coastal walking trail that connects to the ruins before continuing to Plage de Fornali whose crystal clear waters offer wonderful snorkelling.
