Once serving as the terminal of the now-defunct Numedals Railway Line, Rødberg is a small Norwegian village on the banks of the Uvdalsåe River. It’s an attractive base for exploring the natural wonders of Nore og Uvdal, including Trillemarka-Rollagsfjell Nature Reserve and Hardangervidda National Park.
Sprawling south-east of Rødberg is the Trillemarka-Rollagsfjell Nature Reserve, which encompasses cultural heritage sites and ancient woodlands that provide habitat for 93 IUCN Red List species. Old cow paths and drovers roads link its valleys where traditional farming practices can still be observed. Hike between its old farmsteads, cast a fishing line at one of the many lakes or watch the spectacular courtship of the black grouse.
Rødberg also makes an ideal base for exploring Hardangervidda National Park, a spectacular mountain plateau that provides a setting for hiking, climbing and cross-country skiing. It’s home to one of the largest reindeer herds in the world and is dotted with the remains of nomadic Stone Age settlements.
Getting there
Rødberg is around two hours’ drive from Drammen and 2.5 hours from Oslo. Oslo Airport is three hours away. Buses travel through Rødberg and the village is small enough to explore on foot.
