Originally home to the Pennacook people, Revere was first settled by Europeans in 1624 when Samuel Maverick built a house on Admiral’s Hill. It is named after the Revolutionary War hero Paul Revere, who famous embarked on a midnight ride in 1775 to alert the colonial militia about approaching British forces.
Things to do in Revere
Kick back on the sandy crescent of Revere Beach, which overlooks the protected waters of Broad Sound. It is one of the oldest public beaches in the United States and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Coincide your visit with the New England Sand Sculpting Festival to admire its magnificent creations or observe the piping plovers that come to nest here in the springtime.
Sprawling behind Revere Beach is the Rumney Marsh Reservation, which occupies 240 hectares around the Saugus and Pines River estuary. It’s a popular destination for boating and fishing and is frequented by birdwatchers on the lookout for migratory species. A network of hiking trails weaves through the salt marsh, including a short and relatively flat route that’s ideal for families.
A wide range of retail stores can be found at the Northgate Shopping Center, including Market Basket, Price Rite and Burlington. You can browse the latest fashions at Snipes and the Rainbow Shop or pick up cosmetics at Sally Beauty. The Northgate Shopping Center is also a great place to grab a bite to eat, with choices including the Yutaka Buffet, Taco Bell and the UNO Pizzeria & Grill.
Getting around Revere
Revere is around 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Boston and Boston Logan International Airport, which has flights to destinations across the globe. Subway services stop at Beachmont, Revere Beach and Wonderland stations while a network of public buses travels throughout Revere.
