Named after the Quepoa people who once inhabited the area, Quepos is a lively town on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. It serves as a gateway to the wildlife-filled rainforests of Manuel Antonio National Park and is a popular base for anglers hoping to lure Pacific sailfish.
Things to do in Quepos
Sprawling south-east of Quepos is Manuel Antonio National Park, a spectacular tract of coastal rainforest home to squirrel, howler and white-faced monkeys. Join a guided trek to spot sloths and raccoons, as well as a diverse array of birdlife that includes colourful macaws. Fringing the park are gorgeous beaches where you can refresh with a swim, including Playa Escondido and Playa las Gemelas.
Closer to Quepos is Playa Espadilla, a picturesque stretch of sand with beach umbrellas and sun loungers for rent. Backing the beach are several bars and eateries where you can dine throughout the day and massages are readily available. If you prefer to get active, you can go parasailing, banana boating or learn to surf in the small waves.
On the other side of Quepos is Isla Damas, where mangrove-lined estuaries provide habitat for spectacled caimans, green iguanas and boas. Kayaking tours and boat excursions are the most popular way of exploring the waterways while learning about the area’s tropical vegetation. End the day watching the sunset on Playa Isla Damas where baby sea turtles are released into the Pacific Ocean.
