From its grand architecture to its scenic lookouts, Porto is one of Europe's most coveted city break destinations. It enjoys a dramatic setting at the mouth of the Rio Douro, affectionately known as the "River of Gold”. There's beautiful Baroque architecture to admire, world-class galleries to visit and a fabulous food scene to explore.
Things to do in Porto
Porto is dotted with "miradouros" that offer sweeping views of the city, the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Perched high on a hillside above Ribeira Square, Se Cathedral is one of the city's best lookouts. You'll also get stunning views from the Jardim do Palácio de Cristal botanical garden.
Housed inside the lavish Palacio das Carrancas, the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis is one of Portugal's best art museums. It showcases a treasure trove of Portuguese art, from Neolithic carvings to post-modern paintings.
Igreja de Sao Francisco’s Gothic facade is impressive, but venture inside to truly understand why it’s one of Europe's finest Baroque churches, embossed with 100 kilograms of gold leaf. Descend into the catacombs and admire sculptures by local artists like Antonio Teixeira Lopes.
No trip to Porto would be complete without eating your way through its world-class food scene. From Michelin-starred restaurants to trendy wine bars, there's a smorgasbord of choice. For a deeper understanding of Portuguese fare, sign up for a cooking class at one of the locally-run schools.
Getting around Porto
Porto is serviced by a network of wooden trams and an efficient six-line metro network. The road from the riverfront to the city centre is steep, but easily traversed on the funicular. Francisco Sa Carneiro is the closest airport, located 15 minutes from the city centre.
