Best known for its ruins of the ancient civilisation of Pompeii, which was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, Pompei is a historic city with one-of-kind sightseeing experiences and historical sites. While history might take centre stage in Pompei, the city still offers incredible seafood dining, lively nightclubs and traditional theatre entertainment.
Things to do in Pompei
You can’t visit Pompei without seeing the incredible ruins of ancient Pompeii, one of the world’s best archaeological sites. This town was buried under the lapilli of Mount Vesuvius, preserving much of its historic architecture, which dates back to before 79 AD. You can stroll down old Roman streets while entering houses, temples, shops and cafes that are almost 2,000 years old.
More history awaits closer to the city’s centre, such as the Shrine of the Virgin of the Rosary of Pompei, which is a Roman Catholic cathedral dating back to 1901. Enjoy authentic local culture at the Teatro Di Costanzo Mattiello, which puts on local theatre performances.
You’ll also find a range of contemporary entertainment around Pompei, from the lively atmosphere and music at Sofì Restaurant DjBar to the cold beer and hearty fare at The British Pub. Want to try some delicious Italian seafood? Head to Ristorante Garum for sumptuous fish or crustaceans.
Pompei is a short drive from the natural splendour of Lattari Mountains Regional Park, which overlooks the Gulf of Naples. The 160-square-kilometre park features undulating mountainous terrain best explored using the coastal walking trails.
Getting around Pompei
Pompei is best reached by flying into Naples International Airport, which is about 30 kilometres away. You can easily explore the city centre on foot but you’ll need to organise a tour or rent a car to access the ruins of Pompeii and other surrounding sights.
