Parliament Hill is perched on the southern banks of the Ottawa River and is the epicentre of Canadian politics. Locals know it as “The Hill” and have been admiring the grand Gothic revival building since 1865, when Queen Victoria crowned Ottawa as Canada's capital.
The facade showcases soaring sandstone archways, leering gargoyles and lofty turrets topped by green copper roofs. Guided tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at the Centre Block, which is home to the city's iconic Peace Tower. See the Senate and House of Commons and, if you’re lucky, catch a live debate.
In summer watch the changing of the guard on the sprawling front lawns, while at night Parliament Hill is illuminated by a spectacular sound-and-light show. Parliament Hill also hosts community events, such as yoga, outdoor concerts, Canada Day celebrations and Christmas light displays.
