Known as the "Pearl of Islam", Nizwa is an oasis town surrounded by sun-bronzed mountains and beautiful desert scenery. It enchants you with its rich Bedouin culture, historic bazaar, ancient forts and 4WD safaris in the Hajar Mountains.
Things to do in Nizwá
Don’t miss seeing Nizwa Souq, one of Oman's oldest bazaars. The marketplace is filled with stalls selling everything from jewellery and textiles to fish and livestock. The handicrafts section is a wonderful place to pick up unique souvenirs, including "khanjar" tribal curved daggers.
Nizwa Fort has been guarding the town since the 17th century. It was raised by Sultan bin Saif al Yaruba and is famous for its impressive 40-metre-tall round watchtower. From the top you'll get panoramic views over the surrounding desert, date plantations and soaring Hajar Mountains.
Historians can visit Jabrin and Bahla, a pair of ancient fortresses built by the Bani Nebhan tribe. The Heritage-listed Bahla is one of Oman's finest forts and features storied battlements, towering walls and twisting lanes.
Thrilling 4WD safaris offer a unique chance to explore the rugged desert landscape and visit Al Hamra, a rural village that's over 400 years old. From here you can hike up to Jebel Shams, also known as the “Mountain of the Sun”. The summit is 3,000 metres high and commands stunning views of the Grand Canyon of Oman.
Getting around Nizwá
Nizwa is best explored on foot, but you'll also find taxis and microbuses. Nizwa is roughly a two-hour drive from Muscat along a well-maintained highway. Buses also run from Nizwa Souq in around 2.5 hours.
