The lively town of Naval is a gateway to Biliran Island. Relax on beaches fringed by sugar-white sand, hike to waterfalls hidden deep in the jungle and explore Spanish colonial ruins. Charter a boat to visit the postcard-perfect islands that surround Biliran.
Things to do in Naval
Hike along the jungle-covered trail to Ulan Ulan Falls. The 25-metre-high falls cascade down a fern-covered rockface and into a natural pool. Continue along the trail to Recoletos Falls, another stunning place to swim. Cool off in the emerald-green pool and sunbathe on the rocks.
Charter an outrigger boat and explore the Higatangan Rock Formations. The rugged, jungle-covered rocks rise up from the Visayan Sea. Sunbathe on the sandy beach and snorkel in crystalline water, then climb up Marcos Hill, the highest point on the islet, for sparkling views over the surrounding islands. Look for playful dolphins splashing in the boat wake on the ride back to Naval.
Higatangan Island Shifting Sand Bar stretches 200 metres into the Visayan Sea. The gleaming white sand looks striking against the turquoise water. At low tide, you can walk out onto the sandbar and enjoy dramatic views of volcanic mountains in the distance.
Visit the Nasunugan Ruins and admire an enormous watchtower built in the 1700s. The hilltop ruins recall the Spanish colonial period and feature crumbling stone walls overgrown with wild banana trees. Look closely to see fragments of coral in the stone blocks.
Getting around Naval
Motorised tricycles and “habal-habal” motorcycle taxis are the best way to get around Naval. Brightly painted minibuses called “jeepneys” are a fast and affordable way to explore Biliran Island, while private drivers and rental cars offer the freedom to explore Biliran Island at your own pace. Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport in Tacloban City is a three-hour drive away.
