Sprawling across several islands in Finland’s south-west, Naantali is a popular resort town near Turku. It was founded around a medieval Brigittine convent and was once famed for the manufacture of knitted stockings. Since 1922, Naantali has been home to the official summer residence of the President of Finland.
Things to do in Naantali
One of Naantali’s most important architectural landmarks is its stone-built church, which is the only building remaining from the 15th-century St. Bridget’s Convent. Join a guided tour to learn about the convent’s fascinating past and explore the church’s whitewashed interior. At the Naantali Museum, you can admire a miniature model depicting convent life and see traditional crafts within Sau-Kallio House.
On the neighbouring island of Luonnonmaa is Kultaranta, the summer residence of the Finnish president. In addition to its granite-built villa, it encompasses several greenhouses and sprawling gardens that have seen it described as a “Finnish Versailles”. Admire the 3,500 roses that bloom in the summer or explore the natural woodland that occupies the property’s north.
Travelling with kids? Don’t miss a visit to Moomin World, a family-friendly theme park on the island of Kailo that is based on the books of Tove Jansson. Children of all ages will love exploring the blue-hued Moomin House and Snufkin’s Camp while meeting some of their favourite Moomin characters. You can explore along Toffle’s Path or venture into the Hattifatteners’ Cave before watching a live show in the outdoor theatre.
