Surrounded by lakes, Mragowo is a popular resort town in Poland’s north-east. It was established in the 14th century around a Teutonic Knights fortress and remained a small rural hamlet until it was selected as the county seat in 1818. Mragowo is named after the Protestant writer Krzysztof Celestyn Mrongovius, who was a notable defender of the Polish language in the region.
Things to do in Mrągowo
In the heart of town is the Museum in Mragowo, which occupies the 19th-century Town Hall and the Bosniak Guardhouse. Its exhibits include archaeological findings, ethnographic artefacts and contemporary artwork, as well as displays about local literary icons. Changing exhibitions on themes of local significance take place throughout the year.
On the southern outskirts of Mragowo is the Museum of Military Equipment, which boasts a fascinating collection of historic military and emergency vehicles. In addition to getting up close to heavy equipment used by the armies of the Warsaw Pact, you can experience what it’s like to ride in a T-55 tank. Also exhibited is radio equipment used by the 9th Communications Specialist Training Centre.
In the summer months, you can enjoy a refreshing dip in the waters of Czos Lake from the small but inviting City Beach. In addition to thatched beach umbrellas and sun loungers, pedal boats are available for rent and there are a handful of restaurants serving locally caught fish. A marked hiking trail leads along the lake’s eastern shore, with information signs detailing the local ecology and natural springs.
