Overlooking the Indian Ocean, Mogadishu is a historic trade port and the pulsing capital of Somalia. It has experienced a tumultuous past as part of the Sultanate of Mogadishu, the Ajuran Empire and the Hiraab Imamate before being colonised by the Italians in the 19th century. Modern-day Mogadishu is renowned for its monumental mosques, bustling markets and palm-fringed beaches.
Things to do in Mogadishu
Don’t miss the National Museum of Somalia, which was originally established in 1993 by the Italian colonial authorities. It houses an impressive collection of culturally important artefacts that include traditional artwork, ancient weaponry and coins. Get up close to archaeological findings uncovered throughout Somalia and learn about the colonial resistance, as well as life in the country following independence.
One of Mogadishu’s most striking architectural landmarks is the Mosque of Islamic Solidarity, which was completed in 1987. Topped by a 35-metre-high minaret, it is the largest mosque in the Horn of Africa. This whitewashed landmark combines traditional Islamic and East African architectural styles and can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers during Friday prayers.
You can experience the hustle and bustle of daily life at the famous Bakaara Market, an open-air shopping destination that takes its name from the Somali word for “storage”. The market was founded in 1972 and sprawls across several blocks in Mogadishu’s heart. It is the biggest market in Somalia and is stocked with everything from traditional clothing and exotic spices to fresh produce and electronic goods.
