About Mizuho

Set on the Goroku River, Mizuho is surrounded by lush mountains and sparkling rivers, while the township offers historic castles, museums and famous Zen gardens. It's set in the Gifu Prefecture, a scenic region known for its picturesque rural villages.

Things to do in Mizuho

Perched on the summit of Mount Kinka, Gifu Castle is one of Honshu's signature landmarks. It's a replica of an ancient stronghold that was built in the 1600s. Today you can stroll around the grounds and enjoy sweeping views over the Gifu Prefecture, hike the one-hour trail to the summit or ride the Kinka Ropeway.

One of Japan's three "Great Buddha" statues, Shoho-ji stands at almost 14 metres tall and is said to have been constructed over a period of 38 years. It's crafted entirely from papier-mache and is painted in vibrant shades of white and orange.

For centuries the Gifu Prefecture has been known for its cormorant fishing. The Nagara River Ukai Museum offers an in-depth look at the unique farming practice. Watch films in its interactive theatre, check out the educational exhibitions and relax in a scenic viewing area.

Mizuho is a great base for exploring the historic mountain villages of the Gifu Prefecture. Venture just one hour out the city to find Gujo Hachiman, a tiny riverside town founded in the 16th century. The town is dotted with temples, including the Jionzenji, famous for its beautiful Zen garden shaded by leafy maple trees.
