Things to do in Millau
The Millau Viaduct spans across the Tarn Valley and is one of the most impressive feats of engineering in France. British architect Sir Norman Foster-designed the bridge, which floats 343 metres above the valley. The excellent Viaduc Expo visitor centre offers more information on the iconic landmark. Head up to the café for coffee, cake and stunning views over the bridge.
Beffroi de Millau towers over the historical centre and recall’s the town’s medieval past. A steep staircase winds up to the top of the 12th-century bell tower, where you can enjoy sweeping views over the town and the surrounding countryside.
There are dozens of hiking trails to explore in Grands Causses Regional Natural Park. Some take you across rugged limestone plateaus and others wind through dense pine forests. Tandem paragliding and hang-gliding flights unlock bird’s eye views over the dramatic landscapes.
From chic cafes to fine-dining restaurants, Millau is a great place to enjoy cuisine from the Aveyron region. Dine al fresco in atmospheric courtyards and enjoy signature dishes like “aligot” mashed potato with cheese and garlic, sheep’s milk curds and pungent Roquefort cheese. Local patisseries will tempt you with orange blossom bread, flaky croissants and colourful macarons.
