Things to do in Mayagüez
The domed towers of Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria soar over Plaza Colon. Framed by leafy trees, the plaza is a lovely place to sip coffee and enjoy “empanadillas” stuffed with ground beef. Admire the pastel-yellow cathedral from the street and step inside to see the gilded interior.
Tree-lined paths wind through Parque de los Próceres. It’s one of the most beautiful urban parks in Puerto Rico and dotted with picturesque fountains and gazebos. Spot turtles swimming around the emerald-green ponds and stretch your legs on the scenic trail that skirts the Río Yagüez.
Enjoy a night of Caribbean culture at Teatro Yagüez. Housed in a handsome Baroque Revival building, the performing arts theatre is beautifully restored with state-of-the-art facilities. The program is diverse and features everything from plays and musicals to ballet and opera.
From grilled octopus seasoned with herbs and spices to “carrucho” conch salad tossed in a zesty vinaigrette, Mayaguez is a great place to try Puerto Rican cuisine. Seafood is a specialty and caught fresh in the Caribbean Sea. You’ll find some of the best seafood restaurants along waterfront Bulevar Guanajibo.
