Marikina City is known as the “Shoe Capital of the Philippines”, famous for its high-quality footwear. Stroll around the city to see stores selling beautiful leather boots, sandals and high heels. Visit the Marikina City Footwear Museum to find out more about the rich history of shoemaking. The museum showcases a fantastic collection of traditional footwear, as well as shoes owned by Filipino celebrities and presidents.
In the heart of the city is the beautifully restored Our Lady of Abandoned Parish. The Roman Catholic church was built in the 1500s and welcomes visitors with a handsome Baroque façade. Step inside to admire the soaring arches and elaborate ceiling murals.
Marikina River Park stretches for 11 kilometres and is a great place to escape the traffic and stretch your legs. Most locals get around in brightly-painted minibuses known as Jeepneys while motorised tricycles are a quick and easy way to get around the city. You can also hail a taxi for a fast and comfortable ride. Ninoy Aquino International Airport is a 40-minute drive from the city centre.
