Things to do in Madridejos
Step back in time at the Museo Etnológico Silo de Tío Colorao and explore centuries-old subterranean dwellings. Built to endure the hot summers and cool winters of Toledo, the traditional “silo” houses stay a pleasant 20 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Some of the silos were inhabited until the 1950s and are decorated with rustic furniture and homewares. Just out of town, Plaza de Toros hosts concerts and cultural events in a former bullfighting ring.
Madridejos is brimming with restaurants where you can try the rich, flavourful cuisine Toledo is famous for. Carcamusas, a slow-cooked pork dish cooked in a traditional clay pot, is a local specialty. Enjoy it with fresh-baked crusty bread. Save room for slabs of Spanish marzipan made with local almonds and coated with dark chocolate.
The countryside surrounding Madridejos is dotted with historic windmills built in the 19th century. Nearby Molinos de Viento de Consuegra is one of the most scenic and features 12 whitewashed windmills built to grind flour. Walk around the site, take in the views and visit the museum to learn more about the unique history of the buildings. Castillo de Consuegra rises over the countryside and dates back to the Middle Ages. Explore the medieval fortress and admire features like the sawtooth battlements and circular towers.
