Set around a picturesque harbour, the medieval town centre is filled with atmospheric cafes, bars and restaurants. You’ll love sipping sangria in the sunshine and sampling mouth-watering local dishes such as “fabada asturiana”, a rich stew made with pork, chorizo, white beans and saffron.
Llanes is peppered with ancient landmarks that recall the rich history and heritage of the region. Wander around the medieval ruins of El Torreón and peer into Santa María del Conceyu, a magnificent Gothic church built in the 1200s.
A grassy clifftop promenade known as Paseo San Pedro commands sweeping views over Sablón Beach. In summer, the crescent-shaped stretch of sand is dotted with colourful beach umbrellas and towels. A short drive west of Llanes, Playa de Toranda features a golden arc of sand backed by forested cliffs. Accessed via a short hiking trail, Playa de Torimbia is a hidden gem where you can escape the crowds.
With more than 30 ancient paintings and engravings to admire, World Heritage-listed Cueva del Pindal is one of the most important Palaeolithic sites in Spain. Bison, mammoths, horses and fish are just some of the animals painted on the walls in ochre paint. Allow time to stroll along the sea cliffs and visit the ruins of a centuries-old Romanesque monastery.
Getting around Llanes
Llanes is located on the northern coast of Spain, a two-hour drive from Bilbao and five hours from Madrid. The town is compact and easy to get around on foot while Llanes Train Station offers good connections to nearby towns and cities. Bilbao Airport is a two-hour drive away.
