Sharing its borders with Germany and Poland, the Liberec Region sprawls across the far north of the Czech Republic. It takes its name from the capital city, Liberec, and encompasses the rugged landscapes and castle ruins of the Jizera Mountains. Sightsee in Liberec. Surrounded by the Jizera Mountains, Liberec is a lively textile manufacturing hub that has been nicknamed the “Manchester of Bohemia”. Admire its 16th-century castle and the 1893-built City Hall, then soak up the sweeping views across the city from the iconic Ještěd Tower. Exhibits dedicated to nature, science and art are housed within the North Bohemian Museum while the local artists are represented at the Regional Gallery.
Visit Houska Castle. Perched atop a cliff south-west of the Liberec Region is Houska Castle, which is one of the best-preserved Gothic castles in the Czech Republic. In local folklore, it is said to be built over a gateway to Hell and was constructed to prevent demons from reaching the world. Join a guided tour to admire the vintage furnishings and artwork that decorate the castle’s interior and listen to stories about ghosts that appear after dark.
Explore the Bohemian Paradise nature reserve. Officially known as Česky Raj, this spectacular region of sandstone rocks was established as a nature reserve in 1955. Rising atop two basalt volcanic plugs are the 14th-century ruins of Trosky Castle while the largest underground lake in the Czech Republic can be found within the Bozkov Caves. Hiking and cycling trails wind their way through the majestic Podtrosecke Valley.
Getting around Liberec Region
The Liberec Region is around 1.5 hours’ drive from Prague and Vaclav Havel Airport Prague, which has flights to destinations across Europe and the Middle East. Trains connect to major towns and cities throughout the region while buses serve smaller destinations. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around the Liberec Region.
