Things to do in Leibnitz
Handsome historic buildings frame Hauptplatz, the city’s lively main square. Cafes overlook the square and treat you to postcard-perfect views of spire-topped churches like Stadtpfarrkirche and Kapuzinerkloster. Claim an outdoor table and enjoy Austrian specialties like “einspanner” coffee topped with whipped cream and apple strudel.
Vineyard-covered hills surround Leibnitz and produce some of the best wine in Austria. Join a guided tour to learn more about local wine culture in South Styria and visit local vineyards. Picturesque wine taverns called “buschenschanken” dot the countryside and serve local varietals like Welschriesling, a white grape with aromas of citrus and green apple. Pair your wine with a grazing plate loaded with farmhouse cheeses, cured meats and homemade preserves.
Visit the ancient Roman ruins of Flavia Solva in the neighbouring village of Wagna. It’s one of the best-preserved Roman sites in South Styria and has fascinated archeologists for more than 100 years. Peer into the excavation sites from elevated catwalks and visit the museum to see ancient pottery, tools and other relics.
Enjoy sweeping views over the town and surrounding countryside from Wallfahrtskirche am Frauenberg. The Baroque church is perched on a hilltop and features a beautiful interior decorated with colourful frescoes.
